As so often happens in my world of wonder, my day begins with a wonderment. Today was no different.
This morning I started to ponder why in the world someone felt it necessary to remove the letter “E” from the word WONDEROUS to shorten it to WONDROUS. Now you might wonder why, the with all that is going on in the world around me, my mind would choose to take a journey to search what happened to the missing “E” in the word WONDROUS. You might even think, that since E is one of the more common letters of the alphabet and it is used lots of other words, why would I even care that the letter “E” is not in WONDROUS?
Well, in the world of wonder, it does matter.
The reason it matters is because of the journey that wonderment creates.
Here’s how it goes:
The wonderment of what happened to the letter “E” ignited a spark in my curiosity, this spark in my curiosity opened the doorway to search for the word WONDEROUS, and in that simple search for the word WONDEROUS I was gifted one short quotation from H.W. Beecher that popped up and brought a great big smile to my heart!
You might wonder, who was he? Well, Henry Ward Beecher, preacher, orator, lecturer, writer, editor, and reformer, was know for his wildest and most exalted flights of oratory, wrote “It was love that created this wonderous universe, to which science can set no bounds.”
There was my missing “E”! But more importantly, here was a quote from a man I had never heard of before that opened new gateways of exploration for me!
When I read it, my heart wanted to sing and I wanted so skip along chanting it, “It was love that created this wonderous universe, to which science can set no bounds.” , “It was love that created this wonderous universe, to which science can set no bounds.” , “It was love that created this wonderous universe, to which science can set no bounds.”
NO BOUNDS! That is the power of LOVE! That is our right and what bring humanity together. The boundless joining of hearts together in Divine connection – LOVE! The most powerful force in the Universe, it cannot be contained and when shared it grows exponentially and changes lives. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
In my world of wonderment, it was the absence of a simple letter “E” that brought me a grand gift for exploration. A profound reminder and the spark for further wonderment. I invite you on your own journey of wonderment — ALWAYS know that your light and capacity to LOVE knows no bounds!!!! With LOVE you have the ability to create a WONDEROUS Universe!
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! WONDER! WONDER! WONDER! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
In case you might be wondering:
Wondrous vs. wonderous?
Every other word that is wonder+suffix does NOT change the base word at all. For example wonder+ful–>wonderful, wonder+ing–>wondering, wonder+s–>wonders, etc. However, there are three examples where the base DOES change: wondrous, wondrously and wondrousness. After looking on etymonline, and checking both word origins, as well as trying to find any other words that follow this pattern, this is what I discovered from the Oxford Dictionary:
Late 15th century: alteration of obsolete wonders (adjective and adverb), genitive of wonder, on the pattern of marvellous.
I’m guessing that in the late 15th century, people got to busy to bother with an extra “E” or an extra “L” here and there. The 15th century version of modern day texting. LOL
